Using Propeller
If you play around with social media sites, I would highly advise that you get involved in the Propeller community. Like Mixx and reddit, Propeller is easy to use and provides you with easy ways to follow your friends’ stories and easy ways to vote.
Once logged into your Propeller profile you can quickly see your friends’ participation with an overview, recent activity and their submitted stories. From that screen voting is a one click step.
Mixx Locations
Another cool tool on Mixx.com is the ‘add location’ feature. Basically, when you submit a story to Mixx it will ask you if you want to add a location. Now, you don’t have to do this, however this is what will happen if you do.
Mixx users have the option to search for stories by location. So if you’ve entered either a city or zip code with your story, your submission will appear to other local users like this…
I really like this feature a lot. I am very likely to vote for submissions related to a local story, so I think this is very user friendly. As a Mixx user, you have to have entered your location in order for this to work. If you have not, Mixx will ask you to do it.
Keep this in mind when you are submitting a story. If you enter the location your story might come up to more users and have more visibility hopefully amounting to more votes.
Using Mixx Groups
A cool feature over at Mixx.com is the ‘Your Groups’. Mixx has made it simple to track a more targeted group of stories. Not only can you have all your regular Mixx friends, but you can join a ‘group’ withing Mixx if you are invited.
How this works is that a user starts a group and becomes the administrator. As the administrator this user can now invite friends to join the group. Inviting friends is quick. When you click on the invite link, a list of all your mutual friends appears and all you have to do is click on their avatar. You can also choose to email friends with an invitation. Mixx even allows you to send a personal message with your email. If you are invited, you will receive an email where you can accept the invitation easily. Once you are in the group you can access it through the ‘Your Groups’ link in the ‘Your Mixx’ tab in your profile.
By clicking this you can easily see how many users are in the group, how many stories have been posted, and how many within the last day. When a story is submitted , the users receive an email notification that says a story has been submitted to the group.
Once there, voting for the story can’t possibly get any easier.
I started an SEO group over at Mixx today. If you want to join, shoot me an email with your Mixx user name.

Social Marketing and Holidays
I’ve had a super kick back weekend. Aside from watching my son’s football team lose in the semi-finals all was pretty good. I did a little shopping, a little cooking, had a few cocktails, etc. Oh and of course, spent my time on some of the social communities I’m involved in.
I have this theory that if you are new to these sites, holidays or weekends are good times for you to get your feet wet. My very first front page was on a Sunday and I remember it very well. It was a rather lame post about somebody’s job description. Not only did it make the front page, but it had like 2000 diggs. I was really new to digg and surprised that my post had made it.
Same thing with another friend of mine that I’ve been working with a bit. She had some picture of a squirrel. (No offense to squirrel lovers) She too was a new user and her post also made the front page on a weekend also with thousands of diggs.
I was noticing today that typically when I post a story, I need about 80 to 90 diggs for it to go popular, but this weekend that wasn’t the case. I had two see the front page with under 80 diggs and it seems that all of the digg counts on the front page are lower than during the week.
I also had some success on reddit this weekend. I didn’t have a story go to the reddit front page, but I did have one with over 115 votes which is the highest I’ve seen on reddit for my posts. It boosted my karma up about 80 points, so I was really stoked with that.
If you are new to this social insanity, try submitting on the weekends. It’s a slower time. Some of the top players aren’t as active and from what I’ve experienced, it seems to be a bit easier to play on Saturdays and Sundays. I wouldn’t advise submitting on Sunday late afternoon. If you do, you might see your story sit on the upcoming/most on Monday morning only to fall off for lack of support or random buries.
So try it out on a holiday weekend or on a regular weekend. Use your shout and submit something good. If you have yet to see anything go popular, this might be the best shot you have.
Good luck!
